Recently, Chris Daicos presented to our BPC parents about building resilience in adolescents. We have attached presentation materials, resources and some feedback from our parents that attending the evening.
Chris Daicos presents:
Building Resilience in Children and Adolescents.
For children, ‘resilience can be defined as the capacity to spring back, rebound and successfully adapt in the face of adversity and develop social competence despite exposure to severe distress.‘(Rivkin & Hoopman) Resilient children are socially competent, can solve problems have a sense of autonomy and independence, and a sense of purpose and future. As a consequence, these children have an increased capacity to learn. The major determinant of whether a child becomes resilient or not is the degree to which he or she experiences certain protective factors.
Research associates a clear pattern of characteristics within family, school or community that foster resilience in children. These characteristics or ‘protective factors’ appear to alter or even reverse negative outcomes and enable individuals to circumvent life stresses. (B.Benard) This highly interactive and engaging workshop will : • provide an overview of the recent research in the area of resilience; • examine the profile of the resilient child and the protective factors that enhance these qualities • provide an opportunity to identify and associate current work/parenting with protective factors; • explore ways of increasing and maximising these protective factors for children and adolescents
Parent feedback
"I enjoyed the presentation by Chris Daicos. She gave a brief overview on the issues that create stress for teenagers and outlined the components that help to foster resilience in teenagers. The best part, however, were her practical examples and anecdotes that we as parents could all relate to. Her presentation was light, humourous but packed with useful content.
It was a further bonus to meet some other Buckley Park parents and to share our strategies together”. Parent of a Year 8 and a Year 10 student.
