Year 8 Buckley Park College students WIN! the 2017 STATE-WIDE MATHEMATICS GAMES DAY

Each year the 'Mathematical Association of Victoria' run State-wide Mathematics Games Days. These games are an opportunity for students to:

  • develop their mathematical talents and thinking skills in a setting where maths is regarded as fun and worthwhile
  • work with like-minded students from a diverse range of schools
  • participate in mathematics activities without the usual class room pressures
  • win prizes and rewards
  • get excited about maths!

Maths Games Days are a very effective vehicle for getting young people – particularly in the middle years of schooling – enthused about maths. Problem solving and mathematical games address the Victorian Curriculum proficiency strands.

Teams of 4 students compete for a variety of prizes including individual prizes for creativity, contribution to group work, and lucky door prizes. The participants are drawn from those who have a keen interest in mathematics and who can operate as a team. Lateral thinking wins the day!

On Wednesday August the 2nd, Kelly Salpietro our Mathematics Team Leader at Buckley Park College took two teams of four Year 8 students to complete in the Annual Maths Games Day, held at PEGS. A total of 89 teams from both Government and Private schools took part in the day.

Students completed games of strategy against other schools and worked  as a team to complete a variety of problems.

At lunchtime our teams were placed a respectable eighth and twelfth, behind Fintona Girls’ School who were in first and second place. In the afternoon, students worked as a team to complete a set of 30 difficult problems. After a nervous wait, the top three teams were announced.

Our Buckley Park Team 1 was the overall winner.  Each student received a Casio CAS calculator, valued at $230 each. Our second team came a respectable 20th. Congratulations to our team members Dong Li, Tiana Jurukovska, Jackson Kan and Sachin Iyer in Team 1 and Noah Candotti, Emily Newton, Bar Oren and Khushi Malhotra in Team 2.
