A Successful Language Week 2017

Language Week in early August was a great success again with many students participating in many activities.

Monday saw the annual friendly Japan vs Germany soccer match held, with both teams playing well, and the Japanese team winning.  The final cumulative result was a decisive 3-1.  This was very exciting and they were very proud to be awarded the cup at the general assembly - Germany had held onto it for so long.

Students had fun in the Japanese bodii peinto (tattoo) activity with students face painting messages in Japanese characters.  On Friday, students enjoyed a selection of Japanese and German short films.

Brezeltag (Pretzel Day) was the biggest ever - thank you to the German Club for organising and running this again.  Last year’s profits enabled the German Club students to buy a cuckoo clock from Germany for the German room.

Congratulations also to all the students who were received awards for the Language Perfect World Cup, especially the very high achievers who received their awards at the General Assembly during Language Week.  Our new school record holder is Rex Chan with 22,595 points. Well done, Rex!

We have continued to develop strong connections between BPC and our German sister-school Rottmayr-Gymnasium in Laufen, Bavaria by hosting two students since  the start of Term 3.  Lisa Schmid and Sabrina Schmidbauer gave a speech about their experiences recently to the whole school at the assembly.  It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this valuable international cultural connection during Language Week.  Thank you to the hosts, Sai Preeti Gandra and Georgia Panopoulos, and their families.  We look forward to seeing Lisa and Sabrina again in December when Buckley Park College visits the Rottmayr-Gymnasium. 24 students will stay with German families and go to school for nearly a week!

To practise for this and also for the seniors to practise for their oral exams, the Years 10, 11 and 12 German classes went with our Bavarian visitors Lisa and Sabrina to the German restaurant the Hofbräuhaus in Market Lane, Melbourne CBD and practised their conversation skills in an authentic setting.  Good food and good company!

The Japanese Language Links Program continued for the 4th consecutive year with our Year 11 students visiting Aberfeldie Primary School . Each year our students develop a lesson plan in line with the primary students curriculum and deliver their lesson to the students.  This year they taught the Year 5 and 6 classes about how to speak about their hobbies in Japanese, how to read Hiragana characters, how to write their names in Katakana, how to make a jumping frog using Origami as well as the cultural significance of the art of folding paper and calligraphy.   It was a fun time with games, activities and prizes for all.   The Year 11 students received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the students at Aberfeldie Primary and we look forward to them visiting Buckley Park College later this year!

Thank you to all the students and teachers who participated or helped out with Languages Week to make it the enjoyable success it was!
