The Centre for Young Writers
Buckley Park College’s Centre for Young Writers (CYW) provides opportunities for students to learn more about writing, practise their skills, and have fun while doing it. We aim to instil a love for writing in our students, and provide an outlet to have written work published, performed or broadcast.
The CYW physical space is being developed to connect with our library and learning hub. It will facilitate specialised writing skills development within all curriculum areas.
The CYW website www.centreforyoungwriters.com.au allows students to share their writing with the world, and provides a space to read a diverse range of student-written texts.
Each year the CYW holds a Writers Festival for students in Year 7 – 10, where they are exposed to guest authors, writing workshops and writing challenges that put their skills to use. The event concludes with a celebration evening to showcase the work students have written during the festival.
The CYW program also includes the Principal’s Writing Competition, in which students can submit work that relates to a specified theme. The written pieces are judged by a small panel that includes the Principal, and winners are awarded prizes.
The Buckley Buzz, Buckley Park College’s student magazine is written by the students, for the students. It gives budding writers, photographers, editors and designers the opportunity to be involved in an extra-curricular project and see their work published and enjoyed by the school community. All students are encouraged to get involved.
