Year 7 Students and Parents

Firstly, congratulations on making it through the first month of secondary school! There have been occasional lost locker keys, brief moments of confusion between periods, and bumpy transitions from calling it 'little lunch', 'play lunch' or 'snack' to just calling it 'recess', but we at Buckley Park are really proud of the way the Year 7 cohort have dealt so well with the big jump from primary school to high school.

Year 7

Firstly, congratulations on making it through the first month of secondary school! There have been occasional lost locker keys, brief moments of confusion between periods, and bumpy transitions from calling it 'little lunch', 'play lunch' or 'snack' to just calling it 'recess', but we at Buckley Park are really proud of the way the Year 7 cohort have dealt so well with the big jump from primary school to high school.

There are still a few more Year 7 events coming up soon, and I would urge all parents and guardians to ensure they're regularly checking Compass to make sure you don't miss out on anything. This is especially the case when it comes to trying out for interschool sports teams - the notices will be on the Compass Newsfeed, and students will have to be aware of when and where tryouts are taking place.

Those who have already been using Compass may have noticed an occasional period dedicated to 'Connections'. Connections is the time we at Buckley Park allocate for wellbeing and engagement.  Sometimes it will mean a general assembly, sometimes a year level assembly, and sometimes individual classes.

At Year 7, our Connections program is specifically designed to build resilience, instil a sense of positive purpose, help students find meaning in what they do, and acknowledge and celebrate their achievements.  We do this by firstly focusing on their individual Character Strengths and Thinking Styles.  These are the everyday themes and language that underpin everything we do in wellbeing at Buckley Park, and are the big ideas that we focus on in term one.  In later terms we address the big ideas of Fairness, Relationships, Health and Engagement, with a return to Character Strengths and Thinking Styles in term 4.

Connections 2 and 3 this term will centre on Character Strengths.  On Thursday 18th February students were asked to take the University of Pennsylvania VIA (Values in Action) Strength Survey for Children, in order to discern their own particular Character Strengths.  As there were some problems with the website, many of the students were asked to complete the survey at home.  However, we believe that this constitutes an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss Character Strengths (and how best to apply them) with their students.  Indeed, parents may wish to take the survey (or the adult version of it) themselves, and discuss their own Character Strengths and how they use them in their own lives.  The links are available here:

Students do have to register and log on, and should be asked to use their school email addresses to do so.  Parents can, of course, use whatever email addresses they like!

If any parents are interested in discussing our Connections program (and in particular the research that informs it), please feel free to contact the school. We're more than happy to chat about what we're trying to achieve with the students.

And if you have any other questions about anything at all, please don't hesitate to get in touch. It's been a great first week of the year!

Thanks everyone,
