Many of Victoria's best and brightest students were recognised at the VCAL Achievement Awards that took place at the Deakin Edge, Federation Square, on Monday 29 April 2019.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education James Merlino MP commended the award winners for their enthusiasm, commitment and diligence, and for the great example they provide for others.
The VCAL Achievement Awards celebrate outstanding achievements of young people who participate in and complete a VCAL qualification. The awards also recognise the exceptional efforts of committed teachers and community partners who have played significant roles within the VCAL program. The VCAL Achievement Awards take place in Term 2 each year.
The students, schools and their community partners are living examples of excellence in applied learning. They demonstrate that we can and must find diverse ways of challenging, extending and promoting learning for the full range of young people.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Education James Merlino MP, presenting Mimi with her award.
Mimi emerged as a talented leader when she helped organise the school’s market day celebrations. She managed her team’s progress in an inclusive and supportive way, and team members approached her to collaborate on decisions. The group’s market day stall was extremely successful and all money raised was donated to charity.
Mimi has played an active role in the school’s cafe, as a trained barista who can take on any role in the business. She is particularly skilled at customer service and has received positive feedback on her friendly and professional manner. Mimi was part of the team that ran the cafe during a teachers’ conference, where she demonstrated her ability for multi-tasking – taking and delivering customer orders, while helping other students and welcoming visiting teachers.
As part of their VCAL, students complete a community project. Mimi’s class chose to work with Scope, a not-for-profit organisation that supports people with disability to achieve their goals in life. The students completed a Scope training course and volunteered weekly at a balloon footy competition. The Scope workers commented several times on how Mimi was always one of the first students to step up and assist in any way she could.
In the classroom, Mimi’s teachers have noted her excellent organisational skills and high-quality work. She is always willing to support her classmates if they are falling behind or struggling.
Mimi is recognised for her leadership skills across the school community. She has been voted by her fellow students as the 2019 VCAL ambassador, which shows that her peers appreciate her approachable, inclusive style and can-do attitude.
"Congratulations to Year 12 VCAL Leader Mimi French-Wright on winning a prestigious VCAA Achievement Award. We are all very proud of your work and achievements Mimi."

"Mimi has been a valued member of the VCAL family here at Buckley Park College. Her willingness to help in all situations, to make a difference for others within the school and the wider school community, has made her a worthy recipient of this award. We congratulate your effort and achievement Mimi and wish you all the best for your future."
