Term 4-Principal's Report

A Message from the Principal

Term 4 has commenced positively, with our students returning with great energy and enthusiasm.

In the second week of term, our Year 12 students concluded their official classes at Buckley Park College. We celebrated their 13 years of schooling with the traditional Year 12 Breakfast and College Assembly on Thursday, followed by a day of fun and bonding at Funfields on Friday. From Week 3, our Year 12 students have been focused on preparing for their upcoming external VCE exams.

I am extremely proud of the 2025 Year 12 cohort, our largest to date. Their commitment to our college values and their support of one another throughout the year have been exemplary. I wish each of them every success as they strive to achieve their personal best in their exams.

A special thank you goes to our College Captains, whose leadership, energy, and dedication have greatly enriched our school community. They have been instrumental in uniting the student body and leading a variety of initiatives throughout the year.

On 23 October 2025, we celebrated the opening of our annual Art & Design Exhibition, showcasing the remarkable creative talents of our students across the college. The exhibition was a tremendous success.

This term, 46 Year 9 students attended the Leadership Camp at Rubicon, participating in a range of outdoor activities including hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing. In addition, four Year 9 students are spending the entire term at Gnurad-Gundidj School in Glenormiston South as part of the School for Student Leadership program, which focuses on experiential learning beyond the classroom. My thanks go to Mr Carey and the team of teachers who supported our students during these experiences.

Our Year 10 students also completed Work Experience earlier this term — the first year that all Year 10 students were required to participate. The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive. I would like to thank Ms Ferridge and our teachers for visiting students in their workplaces and supporting this valuable learning opportunity.

Over the holidays, our VCE Unit 3 and 4 students attended Trial Exams, which allowed them to apply their learning under exam conditions and receive feedback ahead of their final assessments. My thanks to Ms Vargas and her team for coordinating these exams.

In the first week of term, our Year 10 Health Day focused on building peer connections through workshops with Elephant Ed, Art Therapy, and Team Sports. Thank you to Claire and the Wellbeing Team for organising this important event.

Our Year 7–9 students recently completed Literacy and Numeracy PAT testing, providing valuable data on student growth and helping us identify students for extension and support programs in 2026.

Capital Works

I am delighted to announce that Essence Project Management has been selected as our Project Manager for the $19.3 million Capital Works Program. Essence has reviewed the project, and we anticipate releasing a construction tender in the week of 20 October 2025.

Over the holidays, ramp upgrade works continued and are expected to be completed by the end of the year. I am currently finalising some design aspects, and I am pleased that our Accessibility Building Program will commence at the end of 2025 and be completed by mid-2026.

It is wonderful to see our college receiving this well-deserved investment, modernising our facilities and ensuring that our students have access to a contemporary learning environment.

Planning for 2026

Planning for 2026 is well underway. Workforce planning and recruitment are now complete, and the Leadership Team is reflecting on our 2025 achievements while setting clear goals, actions, and targets for the year ahead.

A Note of Thanks

I wish to apologise for the disappointing way the announcement of my transfer was publicised. This was not consistent with DET processes, and I understand it may have caused unnecessary concern in our community.

The college remains in a strong and positive position, with steady improvement in learning data, growing enrolments, and significant investment in facilities. Our success at Buckley Park College is built on a strong partnership between families, students, and staff. The continued dedication and commitment of our teachers ensure that every initiative we implement is driven by a student-focused approach.

This is an exciting time for our college, and I look forward to celebrating our students’ achievements and sharing further updates on new developments in the coming weeks.

Warm regards,

Harold Cheung

Our 2026 College Captains

  • College Captains are Sebastian TON and Sofia GRAY
  • College Vice Captains are Billy ADAMSON and Ihan WICKRAMASINGHE

When schools, families and students work together, we achieve the best outcomes. These partnerships are essential to creating school environments that support all students to belong, learn and thrive.

Student Behaviour: a shared responsibility

At Buckley Park College all students are expected to be respectful, safe, and engaged. These behaviours help make our school a place where everyone can achieve their best. As a parent and carer, you play a vital role in helping your child to understand and meet shared behaviour expectations. Students meet behaviour expectations by being:

  • Using respectful language.

Safe

  • Speaking up or seeking help from an adult if they or someone else is being treated unfairly.
  • Only bringing safe and necessary items to school.

Engaged

  • Going to school every day, being on time, and ready to learn.
  • Taking part, doing their best, and asking for help when they need.
  • Knowing and following the school’s policies, including the mobile phone policy.

Buckley Park College is supporting our students to meet these expectations by being:

Respectful

  • Teaching and demonstrating school rules and positive behaviour expectations to students.
  • Explicitly teaching, modelling and acknowledging expected respectful behaviour.
  • Engaging collaboratively and positively with all students, parents and carers.

Safe

  • Having clear policies and procedures to prevent and respond to bullying and keep students safe.
  • Offering additional supports to students proactively and supporting students to speak up and seek help.
  • Proactively identifying and addressing problems to maintain a physically, socially and culturally safe school environment.

Engaged

  • Delivering evidence-based, inclusive education that meets the needs of all students.
  • Empowering students to have a say in decisions that affect their learning and school life.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships to ensure all students feel seen, heard and valued.

This closely aligns to our existing SEWL Framework which is used consistently by our staff in all learning spaces:

By modelling and encouraging positive behaviour, you help your child build the skills and habits they need to be successful at school. This can include:

Respectful

  • Knowing the school’s rules and supporting them at home.
  • Modelling respectful behaviour in how you speak to and about school staff, families, and others both in person and online.
  • Making use of the school’s processes to raise and resolve concerns early.

Safe

  • Working together with staff if your child is having problems at school to understand and resolve the issue.
  • Ensuring your child knows it is okay to ask for help from a trusted adult at school.
  • Ensuring your child stays safe online by talking with them and addressing concerns early.

Engaged

  • Helping your child to attend school every day - every day counts.
  • Communicating with school staff and working together to support your child’s learning and wellbeing.
  • Talking with your child about their day and how they are feeling and encouraging their learning by noticing their effort and progress.

Heidi receives the SAGSE Scholarship

Congratulations Heidi!

Year 11 student Heidi Dillon has been awarded a Scholarship for Australian-German Student Exchange (SAGSE)

The exchange program aims to give students an insight into a foreign culture and build friendships between the youth of these two countries. Each year approximately 30 students in years 11 and 12 from NSW, Western Australia and Victoria are selected by SAGSE to participate in the program. Whilst in Germany students stay with a host family and are expected to attend school regularly and also participate in other activities organised by GASS Germany. These include a five day Wintercamp, regional days and a Berlin Camp.

The SAGSE program is highly competitive and has been running since 1967. Heidi applied for this opportunity herself, and was selected from a large pool of applicants, and the other successful candidates come from schools such as Mac Robertson Girl's Highschool, Scotch College and Melbourne High School. It is a meaningful recognition - not just for Heidi, but also for Buckley Park College, as her name and the school’s name are being prominently featured in SAGSE’s promotional materials.

Upon return to Australia, students form a part of the German Australian Students' Society (GASS). GASS assists SAGSE in the annual search for host families, organise social events for the German students throughout their exchange (such as camps, trivia nights and Melbourne Weekend), and provide support for the Australian students who travel to Germany later in the year.

Each year SAGSE and GASS welcome a group of German students to Australia in the middle of June for approximately 10 weeks. During this time, the students will live with Australian host families and attend school with their host brothers/sisters.

Heidi will depart in late November for the 10 week exchange program and we wish her Viel Glück! Gute Reise!

ENPS Grade 6 BPC Values Workshops

BPC Engagement Leaders strengthen community partnerships with our biggest Primary Feeder School - ENPS!

A big thank you to Clair and our Community Engagement Leaders for designing and delivering engaging workshops for our incoming Year 6 students from Essendon North Primary School. These sessions offered practical and meaningful opportunities for students to reflect on our BPC values of Aspiration, Kindness, Resilience and Community.

We take great pride in our strong partnerships with local primary schools and deeply value the ongoing support of our families. Initiatives like this enhance our dynamic and responsive transition program, helping students feel confident, connected, and ready to begin their BPC journey in Year 7.

This of course could not be possible without the support and collaboration between our staff and the amazing team at ENPS. Great staff, great kids and we can't wait to keep elevating our transition provision to even higher levels!

We look forward to continuing to strengthen these community connections and hope to offer similar workshops with our other partner primary schools in the near future.

Due to the population of Western Melbourne skewing further West, School Sport Victoria have restructured some divisions to allow for more equal representation across schools.

Our competing schools will be the current schools in our division, plus some existing Maribyrnong division members. The makeup is below.

I would like to congratulate all of the students who have participated in the Interschool Sport Program this year and hope for more outstanding results next year.
A massive thank you to all of the staff who have volunteered their time to help train, coach and facilitate our teams this year. WIth over 40 different teams representing the school, it is a huge undertaking with staff giving up their free time to give our students these amazing experiences.
