End of Term 3 Principal's Report

A Message from the Principal

As Term 3 draws to a close, it has been a vibrant and rewarding term with students engaging in a wide range of opportunities. Whether through the Arts, Clubs, Sports, or Leadership, these experiences have allowed our students to get involved, develop their interests, and strengthen their sense of connection both within and beyond the classroom. I wish to thank all the college staff for their hard work in supporting our students, especially our Year 12 students, in their final full term of schooling in a shorter than usual 9-week Term 3.

College Events

Our School Production continue to be a highlight of the school year. This year, 90 of our students worked tirelessly with 13 of our staff in showcasing “Footloose”. The cast performed a matinée for our Year 7 and 8 students, then two public evening performances. I was astounded by the creative talents of our students and their commitment to performing highly polished shows. It was also fantastic to see the immense community support of the production, and we have seen this year on Friday both floors of the Clocktower theatre filled. I wish to thank Ms Allan for her leadership as the 2025 director.

Our Year 10 Students participated in our annual RYDA, which aims to provide young people with the skills and strategies they need to stay safe on the roads. At the workshop, students attend six interactive sessions featuring highly engaging practical demonstrations, real-life narratives, videos, quizzes, and interactive role-play. The RYDA approach supports youth development in several areas, including social resilience and anticipating and managing risk. I wish to thank Mr Hogan for organising this important opportunity for our students.

Last week, 100 Year 8 students are currently attending our Tasmania Camp. The Tasmania Camp provided a fantastic experience for our students to broaden their horizons. The Year 8 Camp is a bus tour that involves visiting different locations such as Hobart, Launceston and Port Arthur. Not only is it a great chance to get out of the classroom and engage in active, initiative-based learning, but it’s also a fantastic way for students to challenge and extend themselves in a new, but safe environment. I wish to thank our staff who have supported our students during camp and been away from their family for the week. I especially want to recognise Ms Inverno, our Year 8 Coordinator, for her leadership of this unique experience for our students.

Our Later Years Japanese Students have also been engaged in their annual Amazing Race, where Year 10 and 11 Japanese classes team together to use their language skills and intercultural understanding to complete challenges and find clues in Japanese. This excursion also highlights the many kinds of Japanese influences and businesses in Melbourne CBD. I wish to thank Ms De La Motte and Ms Suh for their work.

It was also wonderful to see the number of families attending Parent Teacher Student Conferences, which provide our families with a chance to connect with our staff and provide an outline of their child’s progress this semester. With the change in times, we have continued to see active engagement through our online sessions.

This week 50 of our Year 9 students will be engaged in a Leadership Camp and Year 10 students will have a week of work experience. Over the holidays our students studying VCE Unit 4 subjects will have their trial exams.

Community Events – Year 11 Senior Ball

On 12 September, 24 of our students participated in the 2025 Year 11 Senior Ball. This event brings our families and students together on an occasion. The Senior Ball is a highlight for our Year 11 students, and it is great to see our community come together to see our students grace the dancefloor. Thank you, Friends of Buckley Park, for organising the Senior Ball to Sally, Penny, and Leonie. I especially want to acknowledge Sally for her tireless efforts volunteering her time for over 12 years in overseeing the Senior Ball, even though she no longer has her children attending college. 2025 will mark Sally’s last year in leading this unique experience for our students.

    Debating

Our second Year 7 Junior Interschool Debating Team won their debate on the negative that
“It should be compulsory for fast food to have plain packaging” against Haileybury College.
I wish to congratulate Arielle Patrick, Audrey Newton and Emma Gomes, with Arielle Patrick
    being awarded Best speaker.

    Capital Works Update

The college, through VSBA, has now appointed a Project Management Firm to review the Master
Plan and prepare the tender for construction.
Additionally, through the Accessibility Building Program, we will see a number of spaces upgraded,
including additional auto doors, outdoor seating platforms and signage.

    2025 Student Numbers

The college is anticipating a Year 7 intake between 157 and 162, which is slightly lower than
anticipated and will have budgetary implications. With this intake, our preliminary projection is that
the college will have a similar student population of 900 students.

    Thanks

I am grateful for our community's ongoing efforts and support. This year, we have seen positive
outcomes in learning, attendance, and retention, which are a testament to the consistent processes
in place at the College and the dedication of our staff. I also deeply appreciate our families'
partnership, whose encouragement and reinforcement of our expectations play a vital role in
    supporting our students’ success.

    Year 8 Tasmanian Camp

Travelling on a bus tour of Tasmania, the Year 8 students visited different locations such as Hobart, Launceston and Port Arthur. Not only is it a great chance to get out of the classroom and engage in active, initiative-based learning, but it’s such a fantastic way for students to challenge and extend themselves.

The trip involved many opportunities for students to learn about our history and to experience some of the natural beauty of Tasmania. From the convict history of Port Arthur to the ancient Hastings caves and thermal pools, on this tour, students got to explore Tasmania’s rich colonial history and stunning natural landscapes as well as experience exciting wildlife adventures at Tasmania’s ZooDoo. From mountains to forests, rivers and gorges. On this outdoor adventure, students explored the stunning natural landscapes nestled among Tasmania’s two major cities Launceston and Hobart.

Supporting students through VCE exams - tips for parents and carers

The VCE exam period can be stressful for students and for the families supporting them. Here are a few tips you can call on to help get through it together.

    Tips for Parents & Carers:

As parents and carers, the most important thing you can do is to keep your household rolling as smoothly as possible. It sends the message that exams are just one part of a much wider and richer life.

Help the student in your family keep an eye on the basics of life:

    • Make sure they are eating a regular and healthy diet

    • Fresh air, friendships and physical activity will help relieve stress and lift mood.

    • Keep sleep patterns on track so they are well rested in the approach to their exams.

    • Encourage moderation in their use of social media.

Somewhere quiet, organised, and with minimal distractions.

Help them create a study plan and break their goals into small chunks, with clear, achievable goals.

Create a study timetable together, which includes breaks and times to relax and socialise.

If you can, don’t ask them to take time off studying for anything that is not urgent, and try to coordinate family time and other necessary tasks around their schedule.

Study is an important part of exam preparation, but time free from study is also essential. Encourage your child to get away from the computer and books and spend time with family, friends or the family pets. This downtime helps the brain process and hold the information it’s being asked to take in.

Talk together about what your student needs from you during exam time. Think and talk about how they manage stress, what you might notice about them, and what you can do to help when you see them struggling.

Listen for signs of anxiety or struggle and respond with compassion and reassurance.

Reflect back and gently challenge when you see they are feeling overwhelmed, losing motivation or avoiding study. Provide an alternative view that reminds them of the positive strengths/achievements/progress they have shown to get to this point in their study.

You know your student better than most other people. Help them to set exam goals and preparation plans that are realistic to their abilities and ambitions and that use their strengths.

We all manage the difficult times in life better when we know we have people supporting us. What role can siblings, aunts, uncles and friends play?

If your child uses the support of a psychologist, counsellor or other professional, make sure they have an appointment in place to help them manage the demands of the exam period.

Applications Open for the Ben Inverno Memorial Scholarship 2026

The Benjamin Inverno Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Buckley Park student who exhibits some of the values and character strengths that Ben demonstrated.

Ben Inverno passed away on the 25th of June 2020, aged 22. He attended Buckley Park College along with his two sisters, Lainie and Eliza. He graduated in 2016 after completing his VCE and was DUX in Physics and Further Mathematics.

To keep Ben’s memory alive and to remove the stigma around mental health issues, it is the hope that by offering this financial support, we can ease some of the burden families face in educating our young people.
The Benjamin Inverno Memorial Scholarship Fund is an initiative of Simone Andrewartha, Ben’s mum. Simone and her team recently raised $12,870 for the Black Dog Institute “One Foot Forward Together” walk. Simone is passionate about supporting others and is an Advanced Mental Health First Aider. She also believes that the first step in fighting this disease is to remove the stigma around mental illness and talking about it.

The scholarship will be awarded to a Buckley Park student in Years 10,11 or 12 (in 2026) who exhibits some of the values and character strengths that Ben demonstrated. These include but are not limited to Courage, integrity, gratitude, learning agility, passion, humility, composure, enthusiasm, a team player, foresight, and empathy. A student may either self-nominate, be nominated by another student, or by a staff member. The Benjamin Inverno Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Buckley Park student who exhibits some of these values and character strengths.

The application should be completed by the nominee and submitted to the Assistant Principal James Stevens of the Later Years st@buckleyparkco.vic.edu.au The due date is Friday 31 October 2025.

The scholarship of $1000 will be available to the recipient as a disbursement towards the cost of their education. This could include fees, textbooks, camps and other educational materials.

The Benjamin Inverno Memorial Scholarship recipient will be announced at the BPC Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 16th December at the Clocktower, Moonee Ponds.

Please see our Assistant Principal James Stevens if you have any questions about the scholarship.

STEAM Academy Expands with New 3D Printers

We are excited to share some fantastic news from the Buckley Park College STEAM Academy.

Thanks to the generous support of our community and the hard work of our Friends of Buckley Park volunteers at the recent Bunnings BBQ fundraiser, we have been able to purchase two brand new 3D printers for the Academy.

These additional printers will allow more students to bring their ideas to life through innovative design, prototyping, and problem-solving. This will mean greater access, reduced waiting times, and expanded opportunities for collaboration across projects.

The printers will play a vital role in student learning, enabling hands-on exploration in areas such as engineering, product design, sustainability, and digital technologies. From prototypes of sustainable houses to creative design challenges, students will be able to apply their skills in practical, real-world contexts.

A big thank you goes out to our Friends of Buckley Park community, staff, and students who volunteered their time at the BBQ, and to everyone in our community who came along to support the fundraiser. Your contributions are directly helping us to expand opportunities for our students and continue building a strong culture of innovation at Buckley Park College and within the STEAM Academy.

We look forward to showcasing the exciting projects our students will create with the new 3D printers!

    Peer Tutoring

Peer Tutoring Program is a great success

The Peer Tutoring Program is a student-run academic support group that is open to all students in the College. It is an initiative started this year by the College Captains. So far, 26 students have signed up for Peer Tutoring, receiving access to study materials from senior students in a shared space. Its first few sessions have seen high numbers of student turnout, although student participation varies each week.

We highly encourage all students to drop by Peer Tutoring in A1 at Lunchtime every Tuesday for help with school work, or to connect with others, even if they have not signed up for Peer Tutoring previously.

We have also organised additional exam preparation sessions to support Year 11 VCE Students in undertaking their Semester 1 Exams.

We are highly grateful for the senior students who have volunteered their time, energy, and invaluable experience in sharing resources, providing guidance, and caring for the program overall. We are thankful for the positive and constructive staff feedback in continually bettering the program, and hope to create a legacy where Peer Tutoring becomes a staple of our College Community through future generations of student leaders.

    Beyond Blue Colour Run

On Friday, 5th September, our Year 7 students took part in the Buckley Park College (BPC) Mental Health Colour Run to raise money for the Beyond Blue Foundation. Our goal is to raise $2000, which will go directly towards the foundation.

All students were invited to wear free dress (out of uniform) for the day for a gold coin donation, with funds raised going towards the Beyond Blue Foundation.

All donations made to Beyond Blue go towards their 24/7 mental health support, advice, and information, as well as other services. These services are entirely funded by the community and philanthropic donations, which is why we would love to get the BPC community involved! We hope that you can get behind this initiative and spread the conversation around the community regarding the importance of youth mental health and wellbeing.

So far we have raised $2,319!

Still time to donate to our fund at the link below.

Japanese Ramen Day and Obento Day

Japanese students participated in 'Ramen Day' activities and Obento Day throughout the last weeks of Term 3.

For 'Ramen Day', students brought cup noodles to class to engage in Japanese cultural activities. These included learnings about Ando Momofuku (the inventor of instant noodles), the history of instant noodels, and brushing up on their chopstick skills!

However, multiculturalism is also highly encouraged, and students weilded their はし(hashi - chopsticks) to eat a wide array of めん (men - noodles) from different countries, including: Vietnamese phở , spicy Korean 'Buldak' ramen, and Indonesian Indomie Mi Goreng. Of course, Fantastic Chicken noodles from Australia was a hit too! Overall, the students had a great time eating noodles in class, and the day was a だいせいこう (daiseikou - a great success).

Our VCE YR12 Japanese students learn more about Japanese culture as they sit down together to eat traditional Japanese bento using chopsticks.

First Aid Updates to Student health and safety

As we transition into Spring, we would like to take a moment to address the importance of student health and safety during this season.

With changes in weather, it is essential for students to be prepared for any potential Allergic reactions or Asthma related incidents that may arise. Please ensure that your child has their Asthma Pump and any necessary Allergy Medications readily available with them at school and that medications are in date. This precaution will help us manage their health effectively throughout the day.
Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated as we strive to maintain a safe environment for all our students. Should you have any further questions or require additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Molly / Helen - First Aid.

Administering painkillers or any other forms of medication.

This Policy is in place to ensure the safety of all students, as administering medication may mask serious signs and symptoms of illness or injury, making it more difficult for medical professionals to accurately diagnose symptoms.

To facilitate any required medical support, we kindly request that you complete a Medication Authority Form. This form is essential for allowing the school to provide authorised medication that may be required by student.

Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated as we strive to maintain a safe environment for all our students. Should you have any further questions or require additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Molly / Helen - First Aid.
